The Academy’s "Singaround" had its June get-together this week.  The event is proving to be very popular with singers wanting to have a go at both solos and duets.  Singaround meets at the Academy on the first Monday of the month between 8.00 and 9.30 pm.  The next meeting will be on 4th July.

Once again there was a wonderful mix of musical genres and styles.  These included Bob performing a great tribute to John Denver. Gary followed this up with a Dylan number and Tony, a guest and visitor to the area,  performed two moving folk songs, including "Louisiana 1927" which was about the tragic flood of that year.   Jane treated us to a wonderful European folk number, and Michael joined with Pauline to perform "I Have Dreamed," from The King and I. Michael also sang "This is the Moment," from Jekyll and Hyde.  Musical Theatre numbers were also performed by two first-time soloists:-  Cecily who sang "Bill" from Showboat , then Lesley with "I Dreamed a Dream," from Les Miserables.  Elaine did a great version of Katie Melua’s "Call off The Search." Eileen and Janice got together at short notice to give a superb performance of  "We Kiss in a Shadow," - another song from The King and I.  Deb gave us ‘My Heart Will Go On’ from Titanic and Pam – an a cappella version of  "Send in the Clowns."  We concluded with a rousing re-run of our bespoke, self-parodying version of  "Black Velvet Band"

It’s been said before, but we seem to have fostered a truly relaxing and supportive atmosphere at the Singaround.  This is helping people try things out, to take risks and have a go without any fear of judgement of any kind.  It is proving to be a fun, popular and energizing experience.

All welcome – especially if you are at an early stage in your solo singing!
